Parrot molting is the replacement of worn feathers with new ones, and in a healthy bird it is slow, orderly and mostly uneventful. Birds shed and replace most of their plumage at least once a year, often with a smaller partial molt about six months later. How long that takes depends heavily on your bird’s size: a macaw is a far longer project than a budgie.
That size effect is not a rough impression. It is a measurable scaling relationship, and it is the most useful thing to understand about a large parrot’s molt.
Why parrot molting takes disproportionately longer in bigger birds
Feathers do not grow faster to compensate for being longer. In a study of flight feather replacement across birds published in PLOS Biology, Rohwer and colleagues found that the summed length of the primary flight feathers scales with body mass almost twice as fast as the rate at which those feathers grow.
The consequence is arithmetic. Feather length climbs as mass to the power 0.316 while growth rate climbs only as mass to the power 0.171, so the time needed to replace the primaries one by one keeps rising with body size. A larger bird is not simply growing more feather. It is growing far more of it at close to the same daily millimeters.
That is why the authors report that smaller birds generally replace all their flight feathers annually, often growing several at once in each wing, while larger flying birds frequently extend primary replacement across two or more years. If your Amazon or macaw appears to leave some flight feathers untouched this season, that is a documented pattern rather than a failure.
The paper covers flying birds broadly rather than parrots specifically, so treat it as the mechanism rather than a schedule for your species. What it explains well is why a small parrot is through the worst of it in weeks while a large one seems to be molting on and off for most of the year.
Captive figures fit the same shape. The veterinarians at VCA Animal Hospitals report that a pet bird’s molt may last only a month, may run several months, and in some birds occurs only every couple of years. Read alongside the scaling work, the long end of that range is where the big parrots live.
The month it happens depends on where the species came from
In the wild, season and day length set the timing, so a species’ native latitude still shows in a bird sitting in a living room. The Merck Veterinary Manual’s review of skin and feather disorders, last reviewed in May 2026, breaks the pattern down by origin.
In North America, many birds go through a major molt between mid-February and mid-March. South American parrots often skip an autumn molt entirely. Parrots native to Asia, Africa or Australia, cockatiels in particular, may start dropping feathers in early September.
So a conure and a ringneck living in the same room can be on visibly different calendars, and neither one is wrong. Before deciding your bird’s timing is abnormal, check which continent its species comes from.
Indoor lighting muddies all of this, because a bird that never sees the days lengthen has nothing to time itself against. Merck lists lack of natural sunlight among the environmental factors that affect birds physically and mentally, and for a caged bird that is a lighting question: a safe daily UVB plan for an indoor parrot is the practical version of it.
Pick the feather up off the cage floor
This is the fastest test in the article and it costs nothing. Merck’s guidance is that molted feathers are generally whole and undamaged, while feathers a bird has plucked or chewed come away shredded or bitten off.
So examine the feather itself, not only the bird. A clean shaft with an intact tip is a feather that fell out on schedule. A feather with a chewed end, or one snapped partway up its length, is a feather that was worked on.

Merck also describes the damage patterns worth recognizing: feathers chewed off at skin level, feathers chewed away with the soft down layer left behind, or feathers chewed only at the tips so the bird looks ragged rather than bare.
Two further markers help. Answering an owner who could not tell the difference on a young cockatiel, Lafeber’s avian team gave a simple threshold: without areas of bare skin, or large patches of exposed gray and white down, the bird is probably not plucking. Position matters as much as the feather, which is why the left-and-right symmetry check is the other half of this examination.
Before you blame the molt, rule out mites
Two parasite problems get mistaken for a bad molt, and Merck separates them cleanly. Scaly face and leg mites are common in budgerigars and less common in other parrots, producing flaky white crusts around the beak, nostrils, eyes or legs that can leave permanent beak deformities if they are not treated. Itching is usually mild or absent, which is exactly why owners miss them.
Feather mites are the reverse of what most people assume. Merck states that despite common belief they rarely affect pet birds. Red mites are the genuine risk, and mainly for birds housed in outdoor aviaries, where the signs are nighttime restlessness and weakness from anemia rather than anything you can see on the plumage.
There is a test for the second one you can run tonight. Cover the cage with a white sheet overnight, then check the sheet in the morning for tiny red spots. The scaly-face type is diagnosed from a skin scraping under a microscope, so that one is a vet appointment rather than a home check.
Nutrition sits underneath all of this. Merck states that poor diets, particularly those lacking vitamin A and protein, directly cause feather abnormalities and weaken the immune system. If your parrot lives on seed, the thirty-day route off an all-seed bowl is worth starting before the next molt rather than during this one, and how much protein a full set of feathers costs is set out separately with the numbers attached.
Daily bathing is not the right answer for every parrot
The usual advice is to mist a molting bird every day. Merck is more specific, and the distinction is worth having: how often you bathe a bird depends on the species it is. Many rainforest birds enjoy daily bathing, while birds from drier climates might need it only once a week.
The mechanism is humidity rather than cleanliness. Raising humidity keeps the skin from drying out, and Merck notes that bathing encourages normal preening and discourages plucking, which matters most in the weeks when a bird is covered in new sheaths.
A cockatoo from Australian scrub and a lorikeet from wet forest are not obviously on the same schedule, and Merck’s own instruction is to check the frequency with your veterinarian rather than assume it.

Feather cysts, circovirus and cage mates
Plenty of feather loss looks seasonal and is not. Three more causes are worth knowing by name, and all three come from Merck’s descriptions rather than from observation.
Feather cysts form when a developing feather cannot break through the skin, curls up inside the follicle and becomes a lump under it. In parrots they appear most often in the primary wing feathers, and they are especially common in blue-and-gold macaws and certain canaries. A veterinarian has to remove the affected follicle surgically, because leaving the follicle in place usually means the cyst comes back.
Psittacine beak and feather disease is a circovirus, and its signature is the inverse of plucking: feather loss in places the bird cannot reach, such as the top of the head. Merck notes it mainly affects young birds and rarely occurs in birds over three years old, that colored feathers may lose their coloration, and that African greys and cockatoos may stop producing powder down. There is no cure, so this is a testing and quarantine problem rather than a wait-and-see one.
The third is not a disease at all. Merck lists barbering, in which one bird inappropriately chews another bird’s feathers, among the causes of feather damage in cage mates. It is worth considering whenever damage sits somewhere the bird’s own beak cannot get to, though so is the circovirus above, which is why that particular pattern belongs in front of an avian vet rather than on a forum.
Where to put your hands, and where not to
Merck’s enrichment guidance contains one instruction most owners have never been given: avoid stroking your bird’s back. Back contact stimulates sexual behavior and hormones, especially in cockatoos, and the sexual frustration that follows is itself associated with feather destructive behavior.
The second is about attention. If your parrot has started chewing its feathers, Merck’s advice is not to reward the behavior with attention or scolding, and to give attention when the bird is not doing it. Reacting every single time is a form of reinforcement even when the reaction is irritation.
The third is consent. If a bird dislikes having its feathers stroked, let it perch on your hand without touching its body. Through a heavy molt that may be most of what it wants from you, and accepting it is not a setback.
The one thing worth writing down
Note the date this molt started, and what your parrot weighs at the start of it. In a large parrot the process is measured in months rather than weeks, and without a start date you have no way of judging whether this one is dragging.
Then leave the bird alone rather more than feels natural. Most of what a molting parrot needs is food it can build feathers out of, dark hours it can sleep through, and a few weeks of not being handled around the head.
If the feathers on the floor start coming up chewed instead of whole, if damage appears somewhere the beak cannot physically reach, or if this molt runs past its season without the flight feathers filling in, that is a call to an avian vet rather than another week of watching. Merck opens its review by calling skin and feather problems among the most common health issues birds have, which is another way of saying your vet has seen this before and will not think you are overreacting.
