Cockatiel Anatomy: What Every Part Is Actually For

Cockatiel anatomy is a cockatoo’s anatomy in miniature: an erectile crest, powder down, and a face built around a hidden ear. A wild-type cockatiel runs about 32 cm (12.5 in) from head to tail tip, weighs 80 to 125 grams, and carries half of that length in the tail alone.

Cockatiel anatomy starts at the crest

Parrots are hookbills. Merck describes the strong curved beak as the tool that breaks seeds and nuts, and points out that birds have no teeth at all. What makes it hookbill-specific is the joint behind it: LafeberVet lists the craniofacial hinge of the psittacine beak as a synovial joint, so the upper beak genuinely moves against the skull instead of sitting on it as fixed bone.

The tongue is the other half of the tool. Lungs that never expand, and air sacs inside the bones

Instead a system of air sacs, sitting under the skin and inside the bones, moves fresh air through the body and keeps the bird light enough to fly.

A cockatiel breathes 40 to 50 times a minute at rest, according to LafeberVet’s reference values. Merck’s entry on lung and airway disorders is the reason that number matters: it says a bird’s respiratory system can be greatly damaged before any symptom is noticed, and that the signs, when they arrive, are labored breathing, a change in voice, low energy and severe weight loss.

Merck also names long-term malnutrition, and vitamin A deficiency specifically, as a major risk factor for chronic aspergillosis, because vitamin A maintains the lining of the respiratory system. Powder down is the dust that makes it a cockatoo

It is not harmless to every bird in the room. Merck’s entry on hypersensitivity pneumonitis, the condition informally called macaw asthma, describes macaws developing it in poorly ventilated spaces shared with cockatoos and African greys, whose powder down irritates sensitive airways. Perch size is the part of that equipment an owner actually controls. LafeberVet recommends a diameter between 1.6 and 3.8 cm (5/8 to 1.5 in), at least two perches spaced far enough apart that the bird can fly or glide between them, and no sandpaper covers, which it describes as very abrasive to the feet.

Anything that changes the breathing rate, holds the crest flat for days, or moves the weight without a reason belongs in front of an avian veterinarian rather than a search box.
