To keep pet birds cool in hot weather, move the cage out of direct sun and away from both the window and the air-conditioning vent, keep air moving through the room without aiming a draft at the bird, refresh the water two or three times a day, and offer water-rich food chilled. Then watch how your bird is breathing.
Those five moves cover most of what an owner can actually control indoors. The detail underneath them is where birds get into trouble.
Why heat is harder on a bird than it is on you
A parrot is already running hot. The Merck Veterinary Manual puts the normal body temperature of most psittacines at 103–106 °F (39–41 °C), several degrees above yours, which means your bird is shedding heat into a room that closes the gap on it as the afternoon goes on.
It also cannot sweat. Penn State Extension describes the alternative plainly: birds use evaporative cooling in the form of panting, and that same cooling method dehydrates them. The mechanism that saves a bird drains it at the same time.
Size makes it worse. RSPCA Australia lists small animals, birds among them, as highly susceptible to heatstroke because a small surface-area-to-volume ratio means they cannot lose heat as fast as larger animals can. A dog has more margin than a budgie does.
There is no single “too hot” number, so measure the room
The Merck manual’s guidance for owners is deliberately loose: birds usually do well at temperatures that are comfortable to people. Treat that as a floor rather than a threshold. It tells you when to start paying attention, not when to worry.
The nearest thing to a number comes from poultry work. Penn State puts the thermoneutral zone for most poultry, the range in which a bird holds its body temperature without spending extra energy, at 60–75 °F (16–24 °C), with heat stress appearing once temperatures reach the 80s and 90s. The same page notes that the point of failure varies by species, by breed and even between individual birds.
No veterinary source states a fixed ceiling for a cockatiel or an African grey, and inventing one would be worse than useless. What is checkable is your own room. Extension guidance for flocks is to place a thermometer at bird level, and a cheap digital thermometer clipped at perch height tells you something a wall thermostat on the far side of the room does not.
Moving the cage is the cheapest way to keep pet birds cool in hot weather
Merck’s advice on cage placement is specific and cuts both ways: avoid putting the cage near windows or air-conditioning, because it can get too hot or too cold. A window seat that was pleasant in April turns into a glass-fronted oven by August, and correcting it costs nothing but a few minutes.
The same manual keeps cages out of the kitchen, its stated reason being smoke and cooking fumes rather than temperature. During a heat wave one room hands you both problems, so it is the first place to rule out.
If the cage genuinely cannot move, shade part of it. Penn State’s note for coop builders holds indoors too — black materials absorb heat while white materials reflect it — so a pale cloth over the sunlit face of the cage does more work than a dark one. Leave the opposite side open so the bird can choose the shade instead of being sealed into it.
Airflow helps; a draft aimed at the bird does not
RSPCA Australia’s hot-weather list for birds is short and practical: extra shade such as 90 percent shade cloth, fans, ice blocks in nesting boxes, and frozen fruit and vegetables. Fans earn their place because moving air carries heat off a bird even when the room temperature has not shifted at all.
Ventilation matters most in exactly the setting a pet bird lives in. Penn State calls it crucial in closed coops and cages, and advises positioning openings so that prevailing wind blows through them rather than past them. Two openings on different walls beat one open window and a closed door.
The fan itself is the risk. If your bird has out-of-cage time, the reason a ceiling fan has to be off before the cage door opens is worth reading before you lean on one all summer. Aim any fan across the room and past the cage rather than into it — the logic behind Merck’s warning about air-conditioning outlets, a small bird sitting in a cold stream of air, applies just as well to a fan.
Water is the thing to get right
Birds drink more in hot weather to replace what panting costs them. Penn State’s summer guidance is to keep water constantly available and genuinely cool, refreshing it several times a day rather than topping up a bowl that has stood at room temperature since breakfast.
In extreme heat the same source suggests adding frozen water bottles, ice cubes or ice blocks to the water dish to encourage drinking, and placing frozen bottles in key areas such as nest boxes. RSPCA Australia gives the same ice-block advice specifically for birds.
Both recommendations were written for flocks in coops and runs, so scale them down honestly. A frozen bottle wedged against the outside of a small cage sits closer to the intent than a block of ice dropped in beside a budgie.

Frozen food, and when you feed
Digestion generates heat. Penn State’s hot-weather advice is to feed early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are lower, and to take feed away during the hottest part of the day so the bird is not producing metabolic heat at three in the afternoon.
The same page recommends freezing fruit or vegetables in water as enrichment that cools as it entertains, with one caveat worth repeating: give them in moderation so treats do not dilute the diet. It also names scratch and corn as things to avoid in a heat wave, because they generate more heat during digestion.
That is poultry guidance, and a companion parrot is not a laying hen. Shifting the timing of food you already give is low risk. Changing what is in the bowl, particularly for a small bird or one that is already unwell, is a conversation for your avian vet rather than a summer experiment.
Humidity decides how well panting works
A bird cools itself by evaporating water through its respiratory tract, and evaporation stalls when the surrounding air is already saturated. Penn State states it directly: high humidity worsens the impact of heat because evaporative cooling is less effective in saturated air.
This is why the same reading on a thermometer means two different things in a humid coastal summer and a dry inland one, and why a bathroom or an unventilated conservatory is a poor place to park a cage in August.
RSPCA Australia’s risk list approaches it from the other side, naming insufficient airflow, lack of shade and water, and warm, humid weather among the factors that tip an animal into heatstroke — and adding that it can develop even in cooler weather if other risk factors are present.
What heat stress looks like, and what to do
Some panting is normal. Penn State describes light panting for short periods in warm weather as unremarkable: the bird breathes slowly with its mouth open. The signs that matter are heavier — rapid panting, crouching or lying down, wings held away from the body to expose the thinly feathered skin underneath, and lethargy.
Not all of that checklist transfers. Pale combs and wattles are a genuine warning sign in a hen and mean nothing on a cockatiel, which has neither. The RSPCA’s species-neutral list is the one to hold on to: lethargy, fast breathing, shaking and collapse.
Heatstroke is not a wait-and-see problem. The RSPCA calls it a life-threatening emergency that can lead to rapid multi-organ failure and death, and says to seek veterinary attention immediately. Move the bird somewhere cooler and get an avian vet on the phone before working through home remedies — what the first fifteen minutes should look like is worth knowing before you need it.
Penn State’s own cooling instruction, submerging the body in cool but not cold water and working it through the feathers to the skin, was written for chickens. A panicking parrot handled that way gets a second stressor on top of the first. Let the vet tell you whether to cool actively, and how.
Summer outings deserve the same caution. The RSPCA lists transport as a risk factor in its own right because it stacks stress, insufficient airflow, lack of shade and lack of water on top of a warm environment, which is most of the list in a single car journey. The older rundown of summer hazards, from car trips to pesticide season, still covers that ground well.
And the cheapest heat mistake tends to happen on the way to fixing one. Opening a window to cool the room is exactly when birds get out, so the five-minute check before any window opens belongs in the same routine as moving the cage.
Start tonight with the thermometer. Clip it at perch height, read it at the hottest hour tomorrow, and you will know whether your bird’s corner of the room is the problem or whether you have been watching the wrong wall.
